WCC Services for Graduate Students

//ashland.mywconline.com and schedule your time. For a live session, email us at writingcenter@ashland.edu

The Ashland University Writing and Communication Center (WCC) is a place where students can go to receive one-on-one feedback from a coach on any project that involves communication—essays, literature reviews, speeches, conference presentations, group presentations, poster presentations, and much more! When working with students, graduate consultants approach communication as a complex and individualized process. They seek to help students learn what works best for them when engaging with this process. The WCC's goal is to help students become more aware, confident communicators.

How do the graduate services work?

The WCC offers email and face-to-face consultations for graduate students. When you schedule an appointment, you will work with one of our graduate consultants. All of our graduate consultants have a graduate degree and have extensive experience with writing center theory and practice.

The majority of graduate and seminary students prefer online appointments, but face-to-face virtual appointments are available as well. Information for scheduling either type of appointment can be found below.

We track all of our appointments using the WCOnline scheduler. Once you have logged into the WCOnline scheduler, make sure that you go to the GRADUATE: Fall 2020 schedule to book your appointment. The first time that a student uses WCO, he/she will need to register for an account. To register for an account, please visit https://ashland.mywconline.com/

For online appointments:

Visit https://ashland.mywconline.com/ and log into Writing Center Online to book an appointment.

At the login page, be sure to select the GRADUATE: Fall 2020 from the drop down menu. Click on one of the white spaces to make an appointment. You will need to select athe length of time you are requeesting, up to 2 hours. Please schedule 60 minutes for every 15 pages of the paper to be reviewed. Once you click “Save Appointment,” you will be directed to a screen that will allow you to upload your paper for review.

A graduate consultant will review your work and usually return it within 48 hours. Because our graduate consultants do not work over the weekends, if you turn your paper in at the end of the week, it will not be returned until the following week. It is always wise to book your appointment with plenty of time before it is due to ensure time for us to review it and you to complete any needed revisions.

Please make note of the following policies:

  • At this time, all of our online appointments are conducted asynchronously via email.

  • Graduate constulants will only review one paper per appointment. If you have multiple papers you would like to have reviewed, you will need to make a separate appointment for each paper.

For face-to-face virtual appointments:

If you would like to schedule a live, virtual appointments, please email writingcenter@ashland.edu. A graduate consultant will get in touch as soon as possible to schedule the appointment.

About Graduate and Seminary WCC Consultations:

What we can do:

  • Provide constructive feedback on your ideas, outlines and drafts

  • Provide help with improving organization and structure

  • Provide feedback to improve word flow, clarity, readability

  • Provide feedback on APA or other formal style guidelines, including in-text citation and documentation

  • Provide feedback on grammar and punctuation errors

What we cannot do:

  • Graduate consultants cannot "fix" or correct errors--they can identify them and point you to resources for help

  • Graduate consultants cannot be content experts in your discipline. Graduate consultants are qualified experts in writing. If you provide an assignment guide, gaduate consultants can let you know if you seem to have met the basic requirements; however, they cannot tell you whether you have gotten your content "right." Consult your professor for help with that.

  • Graduate consultants cannot write your work for you or serve as editors/proofreaders. They are here for your guidance and support only.

  • Be available at the last minute, if you have not completed your work early enough to get feedback in a timely manner.

Graduate students must book appointments through the GRADUATE schedule. Graduate students who would like to use the undergraduate WCC services must receive permission from the Director prior to using these services by emailing writingcenter@ashland.edu.
