Ashland University Bands

The Ashland University Department of Music supports the University Symphonic Band, The University Marching Band, Jazz Orchestra, Community Band, and several small ensembles including woodwind ensemble, jazz combo, brass ensemble, flute choir and percussion ensemble.

The Symphonic Band is Ashland's premier instrumental organization made up of 70 students both music majors and non-majors. In the ranks of small college bands, its musical reputation is growing throughout Ohio. Stressing a high level of artistry and musicianship, the ensemble performs a variety of literature presenting three concerts and performing for campus events. In addition, the group tours each year. Membership is by audition.

Ashland Area Community Concert Band was established in 1993. This ensemble is designed for both university students and members of the Ashland Community to continue their musical study and creative activity. The ensemble rehearses one evening a week and performs a wide variety of literature from Broadway selections, classic marches to masterworks transcribed or written for concert band. No audition is required.

The Jazz Orchestra is one of the finest in Ohio. Made up of both majors and non-majors, it performs for concerts and campus events throughout the year. It hosts the annual Maplerock Jazz Festival which invites outstanding high school jazz ensembles to perform and work with some of the finest professional jazz musicians in the country. This ensemble tours annually and members must audition. Small jazz combos are also formed as schedules allow.

The Eagle Marching Band is made up of 80 students and includes color guard and featured twirlers. The group performs for all home games as well as traveling to marching exhibitions throughout Ohio. The Marching Band is the pride of Ashland University, documented by its growth from only 17 students in 1988 to its present 80. One of the most active organizations on campus, the band has come to represent the best in musical presentation and exciting movement within a contemporary style.

The Symphonic Band, and Eagle Marching Band are directed by Joseph Lewis, Jr., the Director of Bands; with Professor of Music Dr. Scott Garlock directing the Jazz Orchestra; and Leonard Salvo, Professor Emeritus of Music, directing the Ashland Area Community Concert Band.
