Music Audition Repertoire

For Music Majors

Voice (choral ensemble placement is determined only by a live audition)

Any two of the following:

  1. Early Italian aria (e.g., a selection from 24 or 26 or 30 Italian Songs and Arias)
  2. Oratorio aria or operatic aria, any language
  3. Composition from the OMEA High School Solo and Ensemble Contest List
  4. A composition of your choice (recorded accompaniments not permitted)

Piano

  • The student should prepare scales and arpeggios of their choice
  • Two contrasting solo selections such as compositions from the OMEA High School Contest List or other comparable list
  • Additionally, students submitting an uploaded audition should sing 2 different major scales and chords (1-3-5-8-5-3-1) and a simple song such as “America.”

Woodwinds, Brass, Guitar

  • Scales demonstrating the student’s range
  • A solo selection such as a composition from the OMEA High School Contest List or other comparable list. No accompaniment needed.
  • An etude demonstrating technical facility, or an additional solo piece
  • Additionally, students submitting an uploaded audition should sing 2 different major scales and chords (1-3-5-8-5-3-1) and a simple song such as “America.”

Strings

  • 3 octave Major Scales
  • A solo selection such as a composition from the OMEA High School Contest List or other comparable list. No accompaniment needed.
  • An etude demonstrating technical facility
  • Additionally, students submitting an uploaded audition should sing 2 different major scales and chords (1-3-5-8-5-3-1) and a simple song such as “America.”

Percussion

  • Snare drum: Rudiments and a solo piece
  • Any mallet instrument: Major scales and a solo piece
  • Optional: pieces for drum set, timpani, or other instruments
  • Additionally, students submitting an uploaded audition should sing 2 different major scales and chords (1-3-5-8-5-3-1) and a simple song such as “America.”

Organ

  • Hymn in four-part harmony
  • One of the Following:
  1. German Chorale Prelude of the pre-Bach period
  2. A work by J. S. Bach
  • Composition of your choice
  • Additionally, students submitting an uploaded audition should sing 2 different major scales and chords (1-3-5-8-5-3-1) and a simple song such as “America.”

For Music Minors or Ensemble Participants

Instrumental

  • A solo selection of your choice, such as a piece from the OMEA Solo Contest list (do not use ensemble music) 
  • Several scales of your choice
  • Additionally, music minors submitting an uploaded audition should sing 2 different major scales and chords (1-3-5-8-5-3-1) and a simple song such as “America.”

Vocal (choral ensemble placement is determined only by a live audition)

  • Two contrasting songs of your choice with accompaniment (do not use choral music)
  • Additionally, music minors submitting an uploaded audition should sing 2 different major scales and chords (1-3-5-8-5-3-1)

Choral Participant live auditions:

  • Vocal warm-ups to determine your range.
  • Rhythmic and melodic echoes.
  • Melodic sight-singing.  Student may use solfege, numbers, or no system at all.
  • Student may sing a prepared song or part thereof – a contest solo, show tune, folk song, etc.  Please bring the sheet music.  This item is not required, but many students do it.
