Spanish in Law Practice
Recently, the court staff in Holmes County noted on my attorney profile that I speak some Spanish, and they asked me to accept an appointment to represent a Central American client who spoke no English.
At our first hearing, I was introduced to the certified court reporter. The CCR is a person fluent in a foreign language, trained and board-certified to translate in a court of law. Since his skills were greater than mine, he offered to translate for me and my client. I was greatly impressed with the interpreter's ability to put all my questions, instructions, and legal terms into language that the client understood. The CCR seldom interrupted me, and allowed me to express myself at great length, taking down key words as I spoke, which enabled him to remember everything I had said.
Knowledge of Spanish is becoming more and more valuable in the legal profession, even here in Ohio where the Spanish-speaking population is not as visible as in California, Florida, or Texas. Whereas, for many years, immigration attorneys were only available in the big cities, like Cleveland and Akron, today we have an attorney in Wooster who tells me immigration law is 25% of her practice.
Spanish speaking ability is the wave of the future for people whose jobs require them to communicate with a large number of people. It's also gratifying to be able to use this skill to help others, aside from using it in travels, or in reading. Foreign Language Co-Curricular Organizations
As a student of French or Spanish, get involved in your department and participate actively in its co-curricular organizations. In those student groups, you will continue learning outside of the classroom and expand your academic experience while having fun and meeting new people.
Language Clubs
Join the French Club and/or Spanish Club. The clubs provide fun and educational activities that support the language you are studying: movies, music, games, food, cultural programs, and more! Meet people who share your interest in the language and culture. Students at all levels of study are welcome.
Phi Sigma Iota, International Foreign Language Honor Society
Work hard in your studies and you will be rewarded with membership in the prestigious honor society Phi Sigma Iota. Eligibility requirements include: junior status, a B average in both your foreign language course and general studies, and completion of at least one 300-level course at A.U. The society sponsors activities designed to promote language learning and greater cultural understanding: films, guest lecturers, study sessions, and more. Initiation of new members and recognition of graduating seniors takes place each spring.

Resources
There are many components that contribute to the academic and professional experience. Ashland University's Department of Foreign Languages offers a number of student resources to help improve development, gain experience, and sharpen skills.
Language Learning Technology
The language lab is located in 201 Patterson Technology Center. Courses in French, German, Spanish and English as a Second Language at Ashland University are taught in media equipped classrooms in Patterson, Bixler, and sometimes other classrooms across campus. All language classrooms have an instructor station with a networked and Internet connected computer, DVD and VCR and ceiling mounted projector. Some classrooms have additional equipment such as a document projector or Smartboard. In addition, Patterson Hall is part of the Ashland University wireless network.
The language laboratory, located in Room 201 of the Patterson Instructional Technologies Center, serves students in the Department of Foreign Languages and the Ashland Center for English Studies . Students studying English as a Second Language, French, and Spanish can come to the lab to do audio, video, and computer lessons assigned as part of their coursework. The lab is managed by Foreign Language instructor Mary Ball, office 213 Bixler Hall, tel 5945, and is staffed by student assistants.
