Our Purpose

  • To provide those interested in helping others with programs and experiences which will enhance their education
  • To contribute positively to the improvement of the community
  • To enhance the awareness of social issues on the Ashland University campus

What we do to help:

Our Social Work Club connects with the needs of the surrounding community by raising funds and volunteering time to reduce hunger and increase supports for homeless individuals in Ashland County. During the fall semester, we organize Skip-a-Meal Today for United Way. During this event, students can donate a meal swipe to provide one meal to feed the hungry.

Recently, our member students helped with Ashland County's Point-In-Time count, which gets a count of the homeless in the area. With this number, Ashland County is able to get funding to help finance homeless assistance. During the event, the Social Work Club also handed out locally-donated restaurant coupons to the homeless.

In other times of the year, we complete various smaller projects, such as a food drive and an Easter basket donation, to help Ashland's Associated Charities.

Don't wait. Join us and get involved!

Social Work & Family Studies Department Differentiators

  • Over 95 percent of graduates have gotten a job offer or been accepted to a graduate school in the past five years within six months after graduation

  • Past graduates have achieved over a 90 percent pass average on the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), which far exceeded the national pass rate of 78 percent and the Ohio pass rate of 83 percent

  • More than 40 internship agencies are affiliated with this program for numerous internship opportunities in the field

Accredited by the Council on Social Work Education

Ashland University's Social Work & Family Studies program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Field Experience

Field experience is integrated into every social work course. Students complete an agency observation, interview persons who work in those agencies, interview individuals and families for specific assignments, visit a nursing home resident for a semester and attend support groups.

Seniors complete a 500-hour agency placement in their final semester. Students state a preference for the type of agency and the population with whom they wish to work.

Our program has excellent relationships with local agencies; they are eager to have our students as interns because the students are always so well prepared. Our internships are block placements so that students can be in their agencies full-time, rather than running between agency and classes.

Our internships are an opportunity for exciting professional development in a real-life work setting; it is always a semester of tremendous growth. Students develop the confidence they need to enter the career of social work or to begin graduate school.
