Dean's Scholarship

Dean's Scholarship for the College of Arts and Sciences

The Dean's Scholarship was created to enhance the undergraduate academic experience for new first-time and transfer students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences in the following disciplines: Computer Science/Cybersecurity, Journalism and Digital Media, the Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry) and Psychology.

Benefits include a merit-based, renewable scholarship of $1,500 "stacked" on other merit awards received. In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in unique academic communities created around engagement with faculty and a focus on career coaching and preparation.

To qualify, applicants must have a minimum high school or transfer GPA of 3.5. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years with a GPA of 3.0.

Minimum Required High School / Transfer GPA: 3.50

Scholarship Amount: $1,500

Application Criteria: Formal application (the link to the application will be in your portal), essay and interview. Students must be admitted to the major with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher to qualify.

Renewal Criteria: AU GPA 3.00 or greater and maintain Natural Science Major

Application Deadline: The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until all scholarships have been awarded. The deadline for priority consideration is March 1, 2022

Ashland University is a member of the Bioscience Consortium of Northeast Ohio, which supports biotechnology education, undergraduate research, and student inderships. The Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) and WIL Research Laboratories also routinely provide internships for biology majors.

Core Curriculum

Interesting classes you may take include:

  • The Molecular and Cellular Basis of Life. Explore the question: What are the molecular and cellular processes that define life, and how are they sustained from generation to generation?
  • Field Zoology. Study the principles of field study and the collection, preservation and identification of common vertebrate and invertebrate animals.
  • Forensic Science. Explore the application of scientific methods and techniques to problems in the field of forensic science including analysis of hair, fingerprinting, DNA analysis and other topics.

Biology Career Outlook

Graduates of the Biology program go on to explore:

  • Positions in research laboratories, health care, and environmental science
  • Careers as high school biology or science teachers
  • Graduate studies in biology, cellular and molecular biology, ecology and other fields
  • With advanced training, careers as physicians, physical therapists, veterinarians, dentists, optometrists, pharmacists or physician assistants
