K-8 Small Group Reading
Course Description:
If we want to know what students know and are able to do, along with what they need next, using proximity to get up close to students' and their work, is essential. Small groups help us use prxomity to study and interact with students, giving us intel to make instructional plans that meet their individual and collective needs. In this course, we will investigate tools, classroom examples, and actionable steps essential for starting, sustaining, and matering the management of small groups. In doing so, we will uncover structures that foster increasing choice, access, motivation and engagement and designing learning opportunities that are unique to to students' individual interests, passions, habits and needs. THis course will focus on reading, specifically five teacher moves that work together to support students' reading independence through small group learning - kidwatching, pivoting, assessing, curating, and planning. The tools and actionable steps are transferable across grade levels and content areas.
