Fluency in Reading (1CR)

Topic: Reading/Literacy
Instructor: Jodi Rath
Method: Online (OWRK)
Sponsor: AU Columbus Center
Center Offered: Columbus Professional Dev

Course Description:

This course focuses on best practices for building better fluency in reading for all grade levels. We will look at Scarborough’s rope and the place fluency has in the reading system. Oftentimes we think of fluency for reading lengthy passages, but fluency plays a part both in the lower strands of the rope and the upper strands of the rope. We will cover setting a purpose for reading fluency with our students, accuracy, pacing, and expression, segmenting, and why fluency matters. There will be example fluency lessons for different age groups, as well as looking at techniques for fluency, fluency interventions, and tools to measure fluency. This course will also briefly hit on the four types of fluency.
