Center Offered: Columbus Professional Dev

Course Description:

This course will serve as a study of teaching content area vocabulary with a focus on the science of reading. Vocabulary is an essential building block in the bridge between foundational skills and understanding. Both research and evidence have shown that the more a child reads the better their vocabulary and the larger the vocabulary a child contains assists in making more complex reading less difficult. Particular attention will focus on examining interventions and ways to differentiate to meet the needs of the whole child and every type of learner. The course will offer multiple approaches to teach vocabulary and build patterns of learning from root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Some approaches that will be offered in the course are context clues, teaching vocab thematically, semantic mapping, visual supports, student perspective, vocab improv, word consciousness, word walls, and word boxes to name a few.
