Building Academic Vocabulary and Deep Comprehension, Grades 6-12

Vocabulary growth helps children learn about the world in which they live and is directly related to academic achievement. Building a solid vocabulary foundation is one of the most critical indicators of an individual's success in school and life. A large, accessible vocabulary improves students' ability to read, write, and think analytically. Throughout this course, you will identify strategies to expand student word knowledge. You will learn to help students deepen their understanding of complex, grade-level texts and connect meaning to important vocabulary concepts. You will also explore the use of morphology, affixes, and root words and identify how these skills can help students decode the meaning of academic words they find in their studies.

In this course, you will help students capitalize on the prior knowledge and rich cultural heritage they bring to the classroom. There will also be opportunities to design lessons that use best practices in vocabulary development in the classroom. These skills will increase equitable learning and academic success for students. You will explore educational research that investigates various influences, such as cultural or racial differences, income status, and explore the influence of native language. You will delve into differences based on personal identity factors such as race, gender, ethnicity, and cultural background and analyze how these factors influence equitable learning in the classroom. Finally, you will explore the barriers that prevent vocabulary development and learn research-based practices that close gaps and improve academic success.

HOW TO ACCESS YOUR COURSE MATERIALS: 

Within 1-2 business days of your Ashland registration, you will receive an email from your course content provider, Teach & Kids Learn, containing instructions on how to access your course materials. A note, their emails are sometimes forwarded to junk or spam folders. 

You will be working with TKL, through their Learning Management System, to complete the course, after which, your instructor will record your grade on your AU transcript. We will notify you by email once this is done, with instructions on how to view and order transcripts.
