Creating Meaningful Math Engagement
Course Description:
Math education has been revolutionized and now requires students to engage and invest in cognitively demanding, relevant math content. Changing students’ relationship with math requires changing the types of learning students experience. Perhaps the way to help students the most, both in terms of success and attitude, lies in the counterintuitive notion of finding the right level of struggle or challenge—a level that is both constructive and instructive. This includes removing all barriers that create a fixed mindset in our students that come from years of believing that math is only for those who are naturally mathematically talented, especially in students who belong to historically marginalized groups such as students of color, disadvantaged students, multilingual students and students with disabilities. Those days are in the past and we as educators must help students develop the perseverance to problem-solve and be accountable for their learning by cultivating motivation and their intrinsic desire to be successful.
This course will help teachers with reflecting and creating math experiences that will help push students further and engage them with math that is more rigorous and meaningful for them. The resources and tools provided in this course will help to challenge students to engage in productive struggle, collaborate, rigorous thinking, and create a student-centered approach for learning math. Additionally, this course helps educators identify the ways social identities, learning opportunities, and math misconceptions influence mastery of math concepts.
This course is divided into the following modules:
- Setting Students Up for Success in the Mathematics Classroom
- Creating An Effective and Engaging Math Class
- Improving Perseverance in a Problem-Centered Classroom
- Leveraging Formative Assessments
