Supporting Multilingual Learners
Course Description:
Multilingual Learners are the fastest growing group of students in the United States. These students bring rich diversity to our classrooms and our challenge as educators is to provide an environment that nurtures their linguistic and academic developmental environment. In this course, you will apply asset-focused lenses on culture, language, and learning to support language acquisition and content area learning for Multilingual Learners and English Language Learners. An asset-based approach to teaching English Language Learners is about creating a culture where we acknowledge strengths and expect success. When educators adopt this shared vision for success, they create affirming, inclusive environments for learning while maintaining high expectations for student learning. Our approach in this course is to provide learning strategies for fostering language development, developing advanced literacies, cultivating discipline-specific knowledge through evidence-based pedagogies, and culturally responsive assessment and feedback.
