Literacy in the Making
Course Description:
In this course, which consists of 12.5 contact hours and 3 hours of assignments, teachers learn tools to help their students develop literacy skills, social-emotional skills and making skills. For many students, the experience of reading is about answering a series of written prompts, making is limited to STEM activities, and social emotional skills are often discussed in a superficial way. This course combines these skills in innovative and student-centered ways. Stories that are rooted in compassion allow for the exploration of literacy themes. A maker project ties into the theme of the story and provides opportunities for creative expression and the development of maker mindsets that include resiliency, creative confidence, curiosity, grit and collaboration. The focus is on learning by doing. Teachers will learn how to create Literacy in the Making activities to support their classroom instructional practices.
