The goal of this course is to provide opportunities to identify a variety of factors and instructional strategies to help your students become effective and fluent readers. In this course, you will be able to identify and apply the qualitative and quantitative factors that help you choose reading materials that match student needs, interests and proficiencies. You will learn how to help students read complex text closely and deepen text meaning through the use of such tools as: text annotation, text markers, text-based questioning and identifying supporting evidence. You will be able to help students deepen their understanding of complex, grade-level texts through a combination of reading, writing and discussion activities. You will apply higher order thinking strategies such as inquiry learning and Socratic Discussion formats to help students talk about text and share their insights and understandings. You will also be able to teach their students how to use metacognitive strategies to become stronger and more capable readers, thinkers and writers.
Over the course of 6 modules, you will learn what makes a difference in reading performance. You will explore scaffolding techniques, meaning-making strategies and issues that prevent students from becoming fluent, capable readers. You will also explore issues that create inequities in reading performance such as poverty and student personal identity characteristics (race, gender, cultural background, etc.) and differences that may impact and shape student learning, reading progress and motivation in the classroom.
You will learn relevant teaching strategies to ensure that your classroom is centered around equitable instructional practices that help all students become proficient readers. Based on these insights and understandings, you will identify and reflect on your own cultural and personal learner characteristics and those of your students as they apply to reading and learning. You will learn a variety of equitable teaching practices such as how to use scaffolding and peer support to help students develop needed skills that can close reader performance gaps. Insights such as the value of a growth mindset and high expectations will allow you to increase student motivation, engage learners in high academic performance and create a positive, brave learning community in your classroom that helps all students feel safe, accepted, and comfortable sharing their own ideologies, opinions and beliefs.
