Download the directions of Accesssing the Scient of Reading Pathways Learning System to access to course.This course is developed to satisfy the professional development requirements under House Bill 33. It is designed to extend educator knowledge of the science of reading, including evidence-based language and literacy instruction, supporting students with reading difficulties, and instructional strategies for reading and writing. The audience for this course includes teachers of subject areas other than English Language Arts for grades 6-12. .
Each of the modules in this course covers a different topic associated with the science of reading. Modules include information via text and video, graphics, resources, and a response notebook to record notes and reflections. The goal of this course is to increase educators’ knowledge and skills associated with the science of reading, and to identify ways that they can implement their learning in the classroom.
This course consists of four required content modules, four optional content modules, a background survey, pre- and post-course assessments, and a course evaluation. Some individuals may be completing this course with the assistance of a facilitator who will provide additional training and guidance for each module.
We recommend that you contact your Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC) to request pre-approval for the course when planning to use the course hours toward your individual professional development plan (IPDP). When you request pre-approval, check to see if your district LPDC has specific forms they require you to use (e.g. pre-approval forms, time logs, reflection forms). A generic LPDC Form is provided here if your LPDC does not have specific forms.
We have provided an estimated time to complete the course and activities. However, since each person works at their own pace, we suggest that you keep track of the time you spend working on the course.
Overivew of Assignments/Deliverables for Graduate Credit
1. Complete all modules (four required and four optional)
2. Provide a brief summary of each topic and how it relates to your content.
3. Choose one of topics and create a lesson within your content using the concepts to address potential reading problems.
4. Provide a screenshot or electronic copy of the Completion Certificate
