Struggling Readers (1CR)

Topic: Reading/Literacy
Instructor: Jodi Rath
Method: Online (OWRK)
Sponsor: AU Columbus Center
Center Offered: Columbus Professional Dev

Course Description:

This course will focus on students who are reading lower than grade level. We will work to determine where the gap in reading is strongest, whether that be at the decoding stage, fluency, comprehension, motivation, background knowledge, language transfer, tolerance for challenge, ADHD, or dyslexic readers. Once the determination is made, we will discuss next steps to look at: student age, grade level, grade level reading, interventions and differentiations to aid in reading deficiencies, and outside of academic influences that hinder reading (i.e., absences, community, home life, trauma, and lack of essential needs met). The last step of the course will be multiple ways to address the gaps based on the educators’ district leadership, staffing, and policies.
