The Power of Formative Assessment
Course Description:
The Power of Formative Assessment is a graduate-level professional development course designed to help educators use assessment as an active part of the teaching and learning process. Participants examine the purposes of formative and summative assessment and explore how evidence of student learning can be used to identify understanding, uncover misconceptions, provide meaningful feedback, and make timely instructional decisions.
The course emphasizes beginning with the end in mind by connecting standards, learning targets, success criteria, assessment, and instruction. Participants explore practical formative assessment strategies to incorporate before, during, and after instruction, including warm-ups, questioning techniques, student response systems, self-assessment, exit tickets, rubrics, exemplars, and other methods for making student thinking visible.
Throughout the course, participants apply formative assessment concepts to their own instructional settings and consider how assessment practices can promote mastery, student ownership, equitable learning opportunities, and responsive instruction. The emphasis is not simply on collecting more assessment data, but on collecting meaningful evidence at the right time and using that evidence to improve teaching and learning.
